EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR John Dichtl brings to NCPH many years of experience working to promote the field of history and interconnect a wide variety of historians and others employed in the historical community. From 1992 to 2005 he served in various capacities at the Organization of American Historians, where he helped to lead the organization during a period of extensive growth in membership, revenue, and programmatic reach. Dichtl held positions ranging from deputy executive director for six years to interim and acting executive director as well as assistant director and assistant editor of the newsletter. He went to the OAH, in Bloomington, Indiana, from Capitol Hill, where he worked for two years as an editor for the United States Senate Judiciary Committee. Dichtl received his Ph.D. (2000) and M.A. (1993) in American history from Indiana University and is a graduate of Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, where he earned a B.A. in European and World history. One of his most valued professional experiences was his participation in the Seminar for Historical Administration, a leadership development program sponsored by the American Association for State and Local History, American Association of Museums, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the Indiana Historical Society, the National Park Service, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. He is a member of the board of directors of History Associates Incorporated, a national consulting firm for historical research and writing, litigation research, and archives and records management.
Sarah Koeppel joined the NCPH staff in June 2006. She has worked in nonprofits, universities, and field archaeology for more than five years. Before coming to NCPH, she served as Director of Indiana Campus Compact’s AmeriCorps program, the Indiana Reading Corps. In this capacity, she worked with service-learning practitioners, college students, community members, and AmeriCorps members in the largest youth-literacy program in the state.
Prior to Indiana Campus Compact, Sarah served as an AmeriCorps VISTA member in Blanding, Utah. During her year of service, she helped promote archaeological preservation and education to San Juan County 4th grade students and served as coordinator of the Utah Archaeological Site Stewardship Program.
Sarah earned a B.A. in Anthropology with a concentration in Archaeology and History from Auburn University in 2000 and a M.A. in Anthropology with a concentration in Public Archaeology from Western Michigan University in 2006.
